Mangroves and Blue Carbon

The Mangrove and Blue Carbon CO₂: Restoring Sea Country in the Southern Reef Catchments project aims to deliver ecological, cultural, and community benefits through the restoration of coastal ecosystems in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Owners.
Recognising their deep cultural ties and stewardship of “sea country,” the project addresses anthropogenic threats such as vegetation loss, sediment runoff, and urban encroachment that have degraded sensitive marine environments.
Coordinated by the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG), the project will implement on-ground rehabilitation works focused on mangrove restoration, water quality improvement, carbon sequestration, and shoreline protection. It combines traditional knowledge, community engagement, and innovative restoration tools to support biodiversity and ecosystem resilience, contributing to Reef 2050 Plan objectives and long-term sustainability for future generations.
The Mangrove and Blue Carbon CO2: Restoring Sea Country in the Southern Reef Catchments project is funded by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources.
