Landscape Repair Program

The Landscape Repair Program (LRP) is BMRG’s flagship sediment reduction initiative, repairing river, gully and hillslope (grazing land management practice change) across the Burnett Mary region. Delivering coordinated, evidence-based sediment reductions across priority landscapes in the Burnett Mary Reef catchment area. Funded by the Australian Government through Reef Trust, the program aims to:

  • Reduce 18,000 tonnes/year of fine sediment entering the Great Barrier Reef

  • Stabilise priority streambank, gully, and hillslope erosion sites

  • Restore native riparian vegetation and aquatic habitat

  • Improve long-term catchment health and land productivity

The LRP spans the Mary, Burnett, Kolan, Burrum and Baffle catchments, and is guided by a multi-year strategy with targeted annual implementation plans.

Outcomes by 2030:

  • 12.6kt/year sediment savings from streambanks

  • 1.8kt/year from gullies

  • 3.6kt/year from hillslope practices

  • Habitat recovery for the Mary River Turtle (Elusor macrurus), White Throated Snapping Turtle (Elseya albagula), Australian Lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri), Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) and Mary River Cod (Maccullochella mariensis)

Sites underway in 2025:

  • Burnett River - 577n streambank stabilisation completed

Partners: WYLD projects, First Nations Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng & Taribelang Bunda Development Corporation (FNBGGGTBDC), Alluvium

Sites underway in 2025:

  • Obi Obi Creek – multi-property reach restoration including nesting sites for Mary River Turtle

Partners: Alluvium, Kabi Kabi People's Aboriginal Corporation (KKPAC)

Traditional Owner involvement is embedded throughout the program—from co-design to cultural heritage assessments on-ground delivery, and ongoing monitoring.

The Landscape Repair Program (LRP) is an Australian Government initiative, funded by the Australian government's Reef Trust between 2024 and 2030. This project is delivered by the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) and supported by project delivery partners and Traditional Owners.
