Mastering the Terrain: BMRG Staff Complete Specialist 4WD and UTV Training

Recently, Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) staff took a major step in boosting their field-readiness by participating in intensive 4WD and UTV training programs, delivered by the Australian Offroad Academy and led by expert trainer Dave Darmody. These sessions were designed to ensure our team members are fully equipped to operate vehicles safely in some of the region’s most challenging environments.

The 4WD training, held at the stunning Rainbow Beach, saw team members undertake a comprehensive blend of theory and practical exercises focused on safe four-wheel driving and recovery techniques, particularly in sandy environments. Participants gained critical knowledge about recommended tyre pressures for different terrains, identifying recovery points on various vehicle makes, using different types of recovery equipment, and adhering to vital safety protocols during recovery operations. A particularly memorable moment came when the team purposefully bogged a vehicle in wet sand—a surprisingly difficult task!—creating the perfect real-world scenario to practice recovery techniques.

Under Dave's expert instruction, the training also covered pre-start vehicle checks, pre-trip planning, communication tips for convoy driving, understanding vehicle characteristics, winching and pinch point usage, load-carrying capacity, and the importance of using safety dampeners with kinetic ropes. These skills are essential for BMRG staff working remotely, ensuring safer and more effective operations across diverse terrains.

Meanwhile, UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle) training was held at Takura. This course focused on the safe operation and maintenance of UTVs in field conditions. Training components included pre-start vehicle checks, trip planning, understanding UTV characteristics, selecting appropriate tyre pressures for varying terrains, gearing and load capabilities, and meeting legal requirements associated with commercial registration.

Both training programs provided valuable life skills and professional knowledge that directly contribute to BMRG’s commitment to safety, preparedness, and environmental stewardship. Congratulations to all our staff who completed the training—your dedication to developing practical skills ensures BMRG remains ready, capable, and resilient for the important fieldwork ahead!
