Queensland Soil Science Graduates Dive into Laboratory Science
As part of the first quarter of their graduate journey, the 2025 Queensland Soil Science graduates Jess and Mali had the exciting opportunity to spend a week immersed in laboratory work at the EcoSciences Precinct in Brisbane. This experience marked a significant milestone in their development, providing them with valuable hands-on exposure to the complex processes that underpin soil science at an analytical level.
During their time at the EcoSciences Precinct, Jess and Mali had the opportunity to work in the Department of the Environment, Tourism Science and Innovations (DETSI) Chemistry Centre where they were trained by experienced chemists, gaining an in-depth understanding of soil chemistry analysis and the methodologies used to process samples. Their training covered essential laboratory techniques and sample preparation protocols, strengthening their ability to connect field observations with laboratory results.
For Jess and Mali, the experience was not just about learning technical procedures - it was about understanding the critical role that laboratory science plays in informing soil assessments, land management decisions and environmental monitoring. Observing how field samples are analysed to generate meaningful data provided them with important context for their fieldwork and sampling strategies moving forward.
This week-long placement has set a strong foundation for Jess and Mali’s continued professional growth, helping them build confidence in both the scientific and technical aspects of soil science. Their time in the lab also reinforced the value of collaboration between field and laboratory scientists in supporting sustainable land and soil management practices across Queensland.
As they move into the next phase of their graduate program, Jess and Mali carry with them a new depth of understanding that will undoubtedly enhance their future fieldwork, analysis and contributions to the soil science community.
