Revegetation Revival: Burnett River Restoration Effort
On March 17, Gidarjil Development Corporation, in collaboration with Gympie Landcare and Bundaberg Sugar, officially launched a major revegetation project on the Burnett River estuary. This initiative is a key component of the Reef Assist program, managed by the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG), and is dedicated to providing training and employment opportunities that deliver water quality improvements in Great Barrier Reef catchments.
As part of this ambitious project, the Gidarjil nursery team will grow 18,700 native trees to plant at the site. A diverse range of species, including Casuarina glauca, Eucalyptus tereticornis, and Macaranga tanarius, will be planted to help stabilise the riverbank and prevent further erosion. This project will also provide important fauna habitat, promote enhanced biodiversity, and support long-term ecosystem resilience. The team will continue planting trees and undertaking site maintenance through to September this year.
This project is funded through the Queensland Government’s $33.5 million Reef Assist program under the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program.
