Camp Gregory Veteran Retreat Celebrates Opening of New Boat Ramp
The long-awaited boat ramp at Camp Gregory Veteran Retreat (CGVR) was officially opened on Thursday, 27th March 2025. This significant project, funded by the Australian Government's Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants programme, fulfilled the critical need for an evacuation point and training facility for emergency services in an area where such infrastructure was previously absent.
The project came to fruition thanks to many dedicated individuals coming together to realise a vision long held by Roger Dwyer, the founder of the camp. Construction began in October 2024 and was completed on-schedule by mid-February 2025. Woodgate Beach Concreting, led by Jason and Jodie and their talented team, carried out the construction with expertise and precision. Alluvium Design provided both preliminary and detailed design work, while Urban Catalyst 3 skillfully managed the Environmental Impact Assessment and the RAA Application.

Key contributors to this project include Roger Dwyer, the founder of the camp and previous president and owner of the property; Mick Polak, the current president of CGVR; Andrew Treloar from BMRG; Adam Brook from Alluvium; and the dedicated team of veterans, both on the committee and general members, who committed countless hours of work and passion to bring this project to life.
The official opening ceremony was attended by Mayor Helen Blackburn - Bundaberg Regional Council, David Batt - LNP candidate for Hinkler, and BMRG's CEO Tom Espinoza.
In a touching tribute, the boat ramp has been dedicated to Brian 'Simmo' Simpson, a veteran who received a Citation for Bravery for his involvement in the Battles of Coral and Balmoral during the Vietnam War. His dedication and bravery have left a lasting impact on the community, making this dedication a fitting honour to his service.
