Reviving the Mary River Cod

This project supports the recovery and long-term sustainability of the threatened Mary River Cod in South East Queensland through a catchment-wide genetic assessment of both wild and stocked populations. By collecting and analysing genome-wide SNP data, the project aims to establish a genetic baseline to inform effective, evidence-based stocking and conservation strategies.

A key component will be the “Codference,” a two-day conference uniting government agencies, researchers, Traditional Owners, and community groups to share knowledge and co-develop a unified recovery action plan.

Educational signage for recreational fishers will also be created to raise awareness and promote conservation-friendly practices.

The 18-month project will be delivered in three stages: genetic baseline analysis, the Codference, and signage rollout, and the final update of the Mary River Cod Recovery Action Plan.

The Reviving the Mary River Cod project is funded by Queensland’s Department of Primary Industries.
