Inland Burnett Integrated Project

SUPPORTING HEALTHIER WATERWAYS, STRONGER FARMS AND A MORE RESILIENT FUTURE

The Inland Burnett Integrated Project helps farmers improve farm productivity, build resilience and reduce sediment and nutrient runoff to the Great Barrier Reef.

Funded through the Queensland Government’s Reef Water Quality Program, the two-year project
(January 2026 - December 2027) brings together farmers, industry experts and regional partners to demonstrate practical land management solutions that deliver benefits for both agriculture and the environment.

Productive and resilient farms

Healthier
waterways

Natural capital opportunities

The Burnett catchment plays an important role in the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

Better land management in the catchment helps improve water quality flowing to the Reef while supporting more productive, resilient farming businesses.

The project helps landholders improve drought resilience, strengthen farm performance and explore emerging natural capital opportunities through practical, farmer-led solutions.

A farmer-first approach

Demonstration farms are at the heart of the project, showcasing practical land management approaches suited to Inland Burnett conditions.

Through field days, workshops and peer learning, landholders can see what works in practice, hear directly from participating producers and explore opportunities in natural capital and environmental markets.

The project will also support landholders through field days and workshops for peer learning, farm scale natural capital action planning, training opportunities, technical advice and specialist expertise. Engage more than 150 landholders across the Inland Burnett region.

What the project will deliver:

Five demonstration farms

Practical on-farm improvements

Soil, grazing and riparian management

Natural capital assessments

Environmental market pathways

Regional Natural Capital Data and Analytics Platform.

Workshops and field days

Five demonstration farms showcase practical land management tailored to local landscapes and business goals:

riparian restoration & gully remediation

grazing optimisation & pasture improvement

soil health initiatives

water retention and landscape hydration

biodiversity enhancement

carbon sequestration

emerging environmental market opportunities

These farms provide real-world examples of both environmental and business outcomes for other landholders.

Delivered by BMRG, the project brings together farmers, technical experts and industry partners to deliver practical outcomes across the Inland Burnett.

Together, these outcomes will support healthier landscapes, stronger farm businesses and improved Reef water quality.

By the end of 2027, the project aims to:

5 demonstration farms

150+ landholders engaged

Practice change across 30 properties

Improved Reef water quality

Stronger natural capital investment

Regional Natural Capital Dashboard.

Together, these outcomes will support healthier landscapes, stronger farm businesses and improved Reef water quality.

Get Involved

Throughout the project, BMRG will host field days, workshops and events across the Inland Burnett. These activities will provide opportunities for landholders to learn from local producers, explore natural capital opportunities and discover practical ways to improve farm resilience and landscape health.

BMRG looks forward to sharing more stories from demonstration farms and upcoming opportunities for landholders to get involved.

The Inland Burnett Integrated Project delivered by Burnett Mary Regional Group is part of the Reef Place-Based Integrated Projects initiative funded through the Queensland Government’s Queensland Reef Water Quality Program.
