Strengthening Foundations at Soil Science Australia’s ‘Back to Basics’ Training
In an important step in their professional development, the 2025 Queensland Soil Science Graduate cohort and project officers Sam Groom and Phoebe Holland, recently attended Soil Science Australia’s 'Back to Basics' training held in Cleveland. This event provided an excellent opportunity for the graduates and BMRG team to reinforce their core knowledge of soil science through a combination of expert-led presentations and practical, hands-on activities.
The training day covered a wide range of fundamental topics, including soil classification, field pH testing, soil texture analysis and acid sulphate soil field assessment techniques. One of the highlights was the soil pit exercise, where graduates and BMRG staff worked directly with soil profiles to practice identifying horizons, assessing soil structure and discussing the implications of different soil characteristics for land use and management.
The mix of theory and practical demonstrations made the learning experience highly engaging and relevant. The graduates and BMRG staff had the opportunity to learn from leading figures in government, industry and academia, each bringing valuable insights into the application of soil science in different sectors.
The training also introduced graduates to new methods and tools that will support their field assessments and laboratory work throughout the remainder of the program.
Attending the 'Back to Basics' training not only strengthened the graduates' and BMRG staff’s technical skills but also provided an important platform for networking with practicing soil scientists and peers from across Queensland. Building these connections early in their careers will be critical as they move into more advanced work in soil science.
The group left the training with new skills, practical experience and a renewed enthusiasm for applying their knowledge in the field - ready to take on the next challenges in their soil science journeys with confidence.
