Marine Turtle Monitoring

saranne2.jpgTwo community volunteer monitoring groups are supported annually through the Maintaining Coastal Environments program – on Lady Musgrave Island and at Wreck Rock Beach south of Agnes Water.

Turtle monitoring programs contribute to knowledge regarding local population sizes and structures as well as population links on regional, inter-regional and international levels.  The programs provide data that assists with monitoring environmental change and identifies where management intervention is required to ensure the conservation of marine turtle species.

saranne3.jpgMarine turtles that nest in the region include the Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the Flatback turtle (Natator depressus) and the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas).
