Expressions of Interest – Bundaberg Region Canegrowers

Mar 08, 2017

Bundaberg Sugar Services invites growers to participate in the Reef Trust Phase III program. The focus of this program is the reduction of Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) entering the reef lagoon area and ultimately the Great Barrier Reef. Reef Trust Phase III is an extension based program where individual farm assessments including a Property Improvement Plan are made to reduce the amount of DIN leaving the property by improving farming practices. In addition to extension there is a competitive grant component to fund infrastructure or equipment needed to achieve the DIN reduction under the program.

With the focus on reducing DIN to the reef, the methods to achieve this reduction with the extension program vary. The most obvious is reducing the amount of nitrogen fertiliser applied however; other methods include split fertiliser application, the use of enhanced efficiency fertilisers, improved irrigation application and other improved farming techniques. For the grants, projects that focus on methods of reducing the fertiliser rate, reductions in the runoff, and improved fertiliser efficiency will be considered.

If you wish to register an Expression of Interest to participate in the program, contact Matt Leighton at Bundabedrg Sugar Services Ltd on E: matthew_leighton@bdbcanegrowers.com.au, mobile 0437 084 035 or the office 4151 2555.

The Reef Trust Phase III: Reef Alliance ‘Growing a Great Barrier Reef’ project is a partnership between agricultural industry, regional NRM bodies and facilitated by the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF), with a common goal of securing the future health of the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef Alliance Program is funded by the Australian Government Reef Trust.
