Winning Team at Wreck Rock
A team of volunteer researchers have won an award for their work in monitoring
endangered marine turtles.
The Wreck Rock turtle research team won the Volunteering Award at the recent
2008 Environmental Protection Agency Excellence Awards.
The Volunteering Award recognises outstanding achievement working with the Agency
to protect the environment and conserve nature for a sustainable future.
Nev and Bev McLachlan have been volunteering with the Queensland Turtle Conservation
project for over 30 years, and have been leading the Wreck Rock turtle research
project for over 20 years. The project forms part of State, National and International
programs which contribute to the conservation and management of sea turtles through
collaborative research.
The team spends much of December and January patrolling a 22km stretch of beach
monitoring nesting, hatching, predation and erosion. During this period Nev and
Bev also volunteer as campground hosts at the Wreck Rock Campground. In addition
to these duties, they also educate visitors to the area on the importance of turtle
conservation.
“The work may be tiring, but it is extremely rewarding,” they said.
The Burnett Mary Regional Group is proud to have been able to support the Wreck
Rock turtle project for the past three seasons, and extend congratulations to
Nev & Bev on their success.
