Cooloola Coast Mapping Project
After 2 years and 5 Project Officers, Cooloola Coastcare Association Inc (CCAI)
has finalised its very ambitious Cooloola Coast Mapping Project funded by the
Burnett Mary Regional Group.
“This is only the beginning of an active data source for partners of the project
and the community, and can be found on our website http://www.cooloolacoastcare.org.au” said CCAI Projects Coordinator, Maree Prior “You will need Google Earth 4 to
operate it”.
26 transects from Rainbow Beach, Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay have been selected
and mapped. Click on the placemarks for a photo, species area curve and spreadsheet
details. Click on Pandanus 2003, 2006 in the left column; the placemarks indicate
pandanus, some of which were recorded in 2003/4 and then again monitored and treated
in 2006 by Coastcare and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
Maree added, “Further inclusions we hope will be weeds, fire mosaics, shorebird
roosts with saltmarsh monitoring, seagrass monitoring and any other information
that will aid in coastal planning and decision making.”
Presentations of the Project have been made for Cooloola Coastcare members and
guests; the staff at Tin Can Bay P-10 State School to assist in their Reef Guardian
Action Plan; the BMRG Coastal Forum at Elliott Heads and the Coolum Coastcare
Pandanus Monitoring Forum held recently at Nambour. The website caught the interest
of John Sinclair of the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation and Cooloola Coastcare
has been invited to submit an abstract for the upcoming Shifting Sands Conference
in August this year.
Cooloola Coastcare Association Inc is the only Coastcare group in the Gympie
Regional Council area and its key role is to form partnerships, offer assistance
and/or sponsor other groups including community groups, council, schools, business
and tourism in Natural Resource Management projects on the Cooloola Coast to raise
awareness, preserve and enhance the natural environment for future generations.
