A Water Quality Improvement Plan (WQIP) describes current condition and water
quality issues / sources of pollutants (such as sediments, nutrients and pesticides),
sets realistic water quality targets and outlines how these will be achieved.
Together, the three draft plans cover the majority of waterways of the Burnett
Mary region.
The draft Burnett/Baffle Water Quality Improvement Plan was developed by BMRG
in consultation with stakeholders including state government, catchment and industry
groups. Funded through the Coastal Catchment Initiative and supported through
the Reef Water Quality Partnership, the draft Burnett/Baffle WQIP also contains
the environmental values that were identified by the community during public meetings
throughout the catchments: a process undertaken jointly by BMRG and the Environmental
Protection Agency. A report on the outcomes of this workshop, as well as other
supporting documents for the Burnett/Baffle WQIP, are also available on the website.
Although not supported through the Coastal Catchment Initiative, the BMRG committed
to develop two further WQIPs for our region. The draft Burrum WQIP was developed
by Wide Bay Water Corporation in partnership with the BMRG and the draft Mary
WQIP was developed by the BMRG. These plans have been based on the Environmental
Values and Water Quality Objectives scheduled for these catchments by the Environmental
Protection Agency in 2007 under the Environmental Protection (Water) Policy.
Although the three documents vary in style, the final WQIPs will inform the Burnett
