Market Based Instrument Workshop

Market Based Instrument Workshop

The Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) in partnership with Condamine Alliance hosted a workshop for organisations that engage heavily with “peri urban” stakeholders. The opportunity arose from the Market Based Instruments Designer Carrots Program delivered  through Natural Resources and Water’s (NRW)Community Partnerships for the Australian Government.

Market Based Instruments, or MBI’s, are simply a variety of tools that can be used to engage stakeholders in a way that is different and meaningful.  MBI’s can assure appropriate investments are made and increase ownership and understanding.

“Peri urban” people, once called rural-residential or rural-res stakeholders, are loosely defined as those who live in areas not quite rural and not quite urban. They are typically characterised by the “tree changers” who move from cities and suburbia to a more ‘relaxed’ lifestyle.

The workshop was organised to assist the regional organisations to better understand Market Based Instruments, as well as the complexities typical of engaging peri urban stakeholders in natural resource management.  Presenters included experts on Market Based Instruments such as Jill Windle, and well known Peri Urban researcher Darryl Low Choy.

The attendees were split into groups and assisted to develop and design an engagement tool using the foundations of Market Based Instruments.  Each group hypothetically developed a tool that could be implemented in a real life scenario. The demand for the workshop was so great within the Burnett Mary Region, a one day follow up session was held in where attendees reflected on the results of the workshop.

Alana White, Community and Capacity Coordinator from the Burnett Mary Regional Group said that “The capacity of organisations to use different techniques in to engage stakeholders was greatly increased due to the workshop”

It has recently been announced more Designer Carrot, Market Based Instrument workshops will be help throughout Queensland in the months to come. For more information, contact Alana White from the Burnett Mary Regional Group on ph: 4181 2999 ext 114
