The New Gin Gin Wash Down Bay – stopping the spread of weeds through our region!

The New Gin Gin Wash Down Bay – stopping the spread of weeds through our region!

The Burnett East Local Government Authority Cluster, an initiative of the Burnett Mary Regional Group, has helped to reduce the spread and establishment of weed populations by coordinating the installation of a vehicle wash down bay at Gin Gin.  The wash down bay is located opposite the Choice and Mobile service stations on the Bruce Highway in North of Gin Gin town centre. The washdon facility is free to use and is accompanied by a $2 vacuuming service.

By washing the vehicles, this facility can help reduce the spread of invasive weeds within this and the surrounding regions.  Vehicles that may be carrying debris can be cleaned thoroughly so as to reduce the spread of weeds and their seeds across the landscape.  Due to is capacity the potential for use is extensive. The service can be of great benefit to landholders when they are travelling from property to property whilst being of use to animal transporters.

Nick McLean, Manager of natural resources at the Bundaberg Regional Council said that “The washdown bay is a huge asset for Bundaberg Regional Council and a valuable addition to the greater regional network of weed spread preventing facilities. This is a true testament to the dedication the past Kolan Shire had towards the fight against weeds and indeed to all partners involved.”

The landmark infrastructure was supported by many partners including,  Ergon Energy, Power Link, Sun Water, NRW – Blueprint for the Bush, Kolan Shire, Burnett East Local Government Cluster and The Burnett Mary Regional Group, and was opened by Lorraine Pyefinch, in her first opening as Mayor of the new Bundaberg Regional Council. Cr Riccardi and Cr Honour were also present on the day providing support for the project. Local community members and groups enjoyed the chance at networking on the day and seeing the first car drive through the wash down bay.
