Introducing Jason Harvey – Weeds Management Project Officer for Fraser Island

Jason Harvey has recently taken up the position of Weeds Management Project Officer for the Fraser Island Natural Integrity Alliance (FINIA).  FINIA was formed following the Fraser Island Weeds & Pest Workshop in December 2005.  FINIA members agreed to collaborate on a number of issues threatening the future sustainability of Fraser Island's natural environment.  This position was developed to facilitate the actions of and communication between the various groups and regulatory bodies that are FINIA partners and involved in weed management on the island.

FINIA members include the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG), Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), Natural Resources and Water (NR&W), Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries (Biosecurity Queensland), Fraser Coast Regional Council, Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO), National Parks Association of Queensland (NPAQ), University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), Sandy Cape Lighthouse Conservation Association, Lower Mary River Land & Catchment Care Group and representatives of the Butchulla people (the Traditional Owners of Fraser Island).

Jason’s background is Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management.
He comes to the position from Newcastle where he was employed in the area of Bush Regeneration with a local community based organisation called Trees In Newcastle (TIN).  He brings to this position experience in working in significant coastal ecological communities, managing common coastal environmental weeds, liaising with volunteers and community groups and working with National Parks representatives.

While based at the University of the Sunshine Coast his work takes him regularly to the island where he collects data for the ongoing mapping of pest plants and assists with ground works controlling a variety of invasive weed species.  The goal of the position is to use a whole of island landscape approach to plan strategic weed management programs and to act as a central point for communication between participants.
