Dave Darmody, newly appointed Coastal Water Quality Alliance Officer

Dave Darmody is committed to nature based education. That is education in, for and about the environment.  He believes that the world’s natural places are not ours, they are our children’s, we have to instil in our children a love for natural places, and this can’t be done in books or on the net. It has to be done by taking our children into these places and immersing them in the goodness that only Mother Nature can provide.

We can’t be the generation that locked nature away and relegated it to the top shelf where only researchers and academics can have access. Our role should be to develop sustainable practices and to ensure that education about preservation is seen as the sustainable way to preserve our natural places for our children’s children.

The Coastal Water Quality Alliance is a grouping of groups. The members are citizens concerned about the future of our natural places and keen to do something about it. The Alliance offers an immense library of knowledge and specialisations. We have members who are devoted to the study of birds, frogs, weeds; the list goes on… each of these people brings their talents to the table for the good of all members. Our members share the common goal of caring for our catchments, and ensuring their continued health by participating in small or large scale monitoring and/or restoration.

Currently, the Coastal Water Quality Alliance comprises groups from the Mary, Burrum, Isis, Gregory and Cherwell catchments as well as a number of local 'hot spots' in Hervey Bay and Maryborough. The Alliance also provides a technical support role with groups involved with the BMRG’s waterway monitoring program extending as far as Wondai.

The role of the Alliance officer is to facilitate this sharing of knowledge and to lend expertise and specific resources where members see the need.  For example Dave is able to offer support with mapping, sampling technique and practice, machinery calibration and repair and as a referral point between members with specific needs and talents.

The Alliance is hosted by Wide Bay Water Corporation and co funded by BMRG, the program reflects the recognition of, and commitment by, both groups to the continued involvement of the community in water monitoring and improvement programs
