Weed Seed Spread Workshop
The Brian Pastures Research Station in Gayndah was the location of choice for
a weed seed spread workshop that was held on the 2nd of April. The workshop was funded by the Burnett Mary Regional Group, organised
by the Burnett Inland North Local Government Authority Cluster and had technical
information being supplied by Bernie Shore and Jodie Sippel of Biosecurity Queensland.
The workshop was well recieved with 20 local landholders and local council weed
officers in attendance.
The workshop identified the key weeds that are associated with weed seed spread
in the region, and the various ways in which this problem can be addressed. The
weeds of concern include Parthenium Weed, Prickly Acacia and Giants Rats’ Tail
grass.
Lee Dorahy of the North Burnett regional council said ‘Land protection officers
from Biosecurity Queensland delivered information of parthenium weed, rubber vine
and prickly acacia. They informed the participants about preventing weed seed
spread including where to look for seed on a vehicle and the importance of using
the weed hygiene declaration forms’
The participants where shown ways to reduce the spread of these invasive weeds
by washing down vehicles and machinery and by holding new livestock in yards for
up to a week to allow seed to drop off, and also to conduct regular monitoring
of feeding areas, yards and animal enclosures.
The workshop also had a display of some of the declared weeds available so that
participants could identify them in the future. The participants also had the
opportunity to bring in weeds from their properties or region for identification.
Lee Dorahy, said ‘it was great to see so many people conscious of weeds and
their willingness to learn how to prevent future infestations’
