Project ideas needed but funds on hold
The Chairman of the Burnett Mary Regional Group is encouraging groups to continue
to develop ideas for projects despite funds being on hold.
Russell Stewart said that until the new Federal Government gave an indication
of future environmental funding, it was difficult to make commitments for funding.
“The Natural Heritage Trust finishes in June 2008, and the Government has already
said that they will make an announcement once they have reviewed this program,”
he said.
“But until we know an indicative allocation, there are no uncommitted funds in
our budget.”
Mr Stewart said that he wanted to make sure that the success of the past 12 months
continued beyond June.
“It takes a lot of work to identify opportunities, scope projects and get them
running,” he said.
“We now need some very careful management, and trust, to ensure that our momentum
is not lost.”
“All indications are that regional bodies like ours will continue to have the
very important job of managing our natural resources, so I encourage all our partners
to continue to think about future projects.”
