Natural Resource group comments on Traveston Crossing Dam

The Burnett Mary Regional Group has made a submission on the Environmental Impact Statement for the Traveston Crossing Dam.

Chief Executive Officer David Brown said that as a non-political organisation, the Board of the Group believed it was appropriate to make a technical submission, particularly as the Dam related to its plan “Country to Coast – a healthy sustainable future”.

“Our plan contains the detail on the ways that our group addresses natural resource and environmental problems and a set of “Resource Condition Targets” that are measurable, mid term targets for the region’s natural assets,” he said.

“As the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam may prevent some of these targets from being achieved, we felt obliged to point out to both State and Federal governments where we are likely to fail if construction proceeds.”

“We provided comments on regional ecosystem diversity, remnant vegetation, rare and iconic species, water weeds, environmental flows, changes to geomorphology and salinisation,” he said.

Mr Brown also said that the Group may undertake some of the mitigation works if the Dam is approved.

“We are discussing this with Queensland Water Infrastructure, the company who will be building the Dam if it is approved,” he said.

“The mitigation works have been identified in the Environmental Impact Study, and we believe our region has the capability to undertake some of these.”
