Monto prepares for Landcare conference

The venue for the Queensland Landcare Conference has become greener – and it’s not just because of the rain!

Over 300 native trees and shrubs have been planted at the Monto Showgrounds in preparation for the conference to be held this September.

Conference Organising Committee member Michelle Gleeson said that the tree planning project was a joint initiative of the Monto Show Society, Monto Shire Council and North Burnett Landcare.

Preparing for the Conference: Barung Contracting Team Member Jolyon Froude, North Burnett Landcare Group Project Officer Glenn Baker, President of the Monto Show Society Bill Avis, and Barung Contracting Services Co-ordinator Brendan Stephen.
“We also had a wonderful contribution from Barung Landcare, with their contracting services team giving us two days of their time and expertise as part of the their sponsorship of the Conference.

She said that the project would not only beautify the showgrounds, but also provide an example of the benefits of growing native species.

“We only used species indigenous to the area, and even included some bush food trees,” she said.

“By September, the plants will have grown and the grounds will look great – we hope the delegates find the trees a nice backdrop to the Conference”.

Landcare Queensland Manager Emma Trigg was pleased to see the collaboration on the tree planting project and feels the theme of this year’s conference “Sustainability by Design” will have relevance for everyone who attends.

“We need to look at sustainability not just in the way we operate and take care of our landscape, but also the sustainability of our lifestyles,” she said.

While the Landcare Conference program will include the latest in on-farm practices and state-wide initiatives in natural resource management, there have also been speakers secured to address broader issues such as mental health in our communities.

The conference will be held in Monto from the 21st – 24th September.  For sponsorship, trade display or registration information, click here.
