Disgruntled dugong heading up river

A disgruntled dugong is heading to the upper reaches of the Burnett and Mary Rivers to help spread a message about stormwater pollution.

Dewey the Dugong is one of the mascots for the campaign which has a simple message: “The stormwater drain in your street runs into our rivers and out to sea. Don’t give your waste a free ride.”

Chief Executive Officer of the Burnett Mary Regional Group David Brown said the visits to towns in the upper Burnett and Mary would emphasise the connection between the land and the sea.

“Stormwater pollution is not just a problem for the bigger coastal towns’ he said.

“We know that there are problems throughout the catchments, resulting in too much nutrient and sediment entering the waterways, and its effects are felt downstream.”

Mr Brown said that the stormwater campaign was directed at everyone.

“In town, people need to think about detergents and rubbish that will end up in the river, while farmers need to look at best management practice on their properties.

He said that many graziers were already addressing problems by providing off stream watering points and stopping bank erosion.

“The fact sheets for this campaign give very good information on ways to reduce on stormwater pollution – whether in town or on the farm.”

“Dewey” will visit the following towns as part of the campaign.
