Landcare celebrates Steve Irwin Day
A landcare group in the Burnett Mary Region has helped to remember the late Steve
Irwin.
Barung Landcare, based in Maleny on the Blackall Range together with Queensland
Landcare and Landcare Australia held interactive workshops and educational displays
at Australia Zoo as part of “Steve Irwin Day” celebrations late last year.
Barung nursery staff and volunteers conducted hands on training in propagating
native plants, a competition on naming local endangered species, and prizes of
chocolates in the shape of Mary River turtles.
Barung staff member Fuschia Collard said that visitors to the displays were very
interested in learning about the local environment and what they could do to help.
“There was a real sense in the crowd of 5000 people that more has to be done
to help our environment,” she said.
"It is important for people to see the difference that can be made in the environment
in their local area by doing something as simple as planting appropriate native
species.”
“We always encourage people with the message that "the right plant, in the right
place, at the right time" can make a difference.”
Ms Collard said that the Mary River turtle chocolates were very popular and an
effective way of raising awareness of endangered species.
“It really made people think about this turtle and its future, and I thank the
Tiaro Landcare for donating the chocolates – it helped to make a fantastic day.”
She said Australia Zoo staff were very enthusiastic about Landcare being involved
in the day.
“We even had a visit from Steve and Terri's young son Bob Irwin,” she said.
Barung is supported by the Burnett Mary Regional Group through the National Landcare
programme.
