Unwanted friends campaign a success
A campaign on the danger of bringing home unwanted friends has been a great success.
Entitled “Beware what you bring home”, it features a young lady bringing home
a “friend” to meet her parents.
The television advertisement is funded by the Burnett Mary Regional Group and
has raised awareness of the danger of transporting weeds throughout the countryside.
Chairman of the Group Russell Stewart said that dangerous weed “friends” could
infiltrate and destroy crops and farming livelihoods.
“It is essential that the community understands that distributing weeds can be
avoided and that there are proactive measures people can take to ensure this doesn’t
happen,” Mr Stewart said.
He said that the use of humour in the advertisement made more people take notice.
“Since it first appeared on television in November last year, I have received
a lot of positive comments from people throughout the region,” he said.
“It has really highlighted to people how easy it can be to bring home more than
you bargained for,” Mr Stewart said.
He said that the “Beware what you bring home” campaign recommends proactive measures
such as machinery wash-downs in designated areas, avoiding transporting unknown
plants and working away from weed-prone areas.
“The spread of weeds can occur so quickly and has a huge economic and environmental
cost,” he said.
The weeds awareness campaign is a partnership between BMRG and the Councils of
Cherbourg, Kilkivan, Kingaroy, Murgon, Nanango and Wondai.
