Water Quality and Equitable Use

Water is probably the most commonly recognised of the region's natural resources. Water issues are also very politically contentious.  Clean water is essential for human health and the integrity of our aquatic and marine ecosystems.  It also sustains many of the region's economic activities including grazing and irrigated primary production, heavy industry and tourism such as recreational fishing.

Water provides the connection between land and sea.  However, there are two main properties of fresh water - supply (including flow) and quality that define overall aquatic ecosystem condition that maintains freshwater biodiversity.
