Land for Wildlife

What is Land for Wildlife?

Land for Wildlife is a national, voluntary nature conservation program that encourages and assists landholders to provide habitat for wildlife on their properties.  Land for Wildlife also supports landholders to integrate nature conservation with other land management activities, such as grazing and hobby farming.

Land for Wildlife brings together like-minded landholders to share their skills and knowledge about nature conservation activities through workshops, field days and a quarterly newsletter.

Who is eligible to join?

People with properties over one hectare in size may apply for free Land for Wildlife membership.  Properties usually need to contain at least two hectares of "retained habitat" - native vegetation that provides good quality habitat for native animals.  Landholders who have just purchased a property in the area are encouraged to join to learn about the native plants and wildlife that are on their land.  Schools, organisations, community groups and private landholders are also encouraged to join.

What are the benefits?

Landholders who join Land for Wildlife receive:
  • Advice on the native plants, wildlife and ecosystems
  • Advice on revegetation, weed control, pest animal control and ecological processes
  • Quarterly newsletters
  • Technical notes
  • An iconic Land for Wildlife sign for your front gate
  • Opportunities to attend free workshops, field days and meet other like-minded landholders
Landholders may also be eligible to receive incentives to create, improve and protect wildlife habitat.
