Reef Rescue Horticulture

Horticulture in the Burnett Mary region is well known for its fresh produce and is estimated to inject more than 1 billion dollars per year into the Queensland economy. The industry has been very proactive in its support for Reef Rescue with a number of growers already completing projects that capture water run-off or improve the quality of water that escapes from the farm and enters waterways leading into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon.

Sustainable Horticulture

Growcom are important partners in the Burnett Mary Reef Partnership. Their extension staff assist growers to complete a Water Quality Risk Assessment, which is a component of the Growcom Farming Management Systems program. Once the risk assessment is complete, growers are able to apply for incentives from the pool of funds provided by the Australian Government's Reef Rescue program. Eligible activities for the incentive program include;
  • Permanent bed/controlled traffic farming
  • Improved fertiliser applicators
  • Low volume chemical applicators
  • Re-vegetation/soil health/mulching/composting
  • Improved nutrient management systems
