Productive partnerships for wetland management
The condition of 27 wetlands in the Burnett Mary region has been improved under
a partnership with Australia’s leading not for profit wetland conservation organisation.
WetlandCare Australia works to improve wetlands by building the capacity of the
community while working in strategic partnerships with governments, industry and
business.
Since 2008, WetlandCare Australia has been working in partnership with the Burnett
Mary Regional Group undertaking wetland rehabilitation, raising awareness, and
forging multi-partnered approaches to wetland management within the region. As
part of this program, seventeen of forty-two regionally prioritised wetland systems
have had significant on-ground works undertaken to improve their ecological health.
Additionally, another ten wetland projects have been undertaken, including key
rehabilitation works and building of strong partnerships within the region.
More recently this work has been further enhanced through implementation of the
Regional Biopass Strategy and the renewal of the Coastal Water Quality Alliance.
Together BMRG and WetlandCare Australia offers a host of services, including:
• Land and water management advice and support,
• Community environmental education and extension,
• Assessment and prioritisation of wetlands for action at local, regional and
state scales,
• Preparation of detailed management plans and design and costing of land and
water rehabilitation works,
• Supervision and monitoring of on-ground works,
• Public consultation and awareness raising services, workshops and regional
forums, and;
• Professional consultancies in wetland assessment and management planning
It’s a great example of positive partnerships in action.
