New agreement to tackle weeds and pests
Who is responsible for reducing pest plants and animals in Queensland?
The answer to this question is much clearer following an historic agreement signed
last month.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the Local Government Association
of Queensland, the Queensland Government through Biosecurity Queensland, and the
Queensland collective of natural resource management groups.
It clarifies the roles and responsibilities of each party, ensuring better coordination
in managing pest problems.
Weeds and pest animals have major impacts on the Queensland economy, environment,
social amenity and human health. They impact on primary, tourism and infrastructure
industries, natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, recreational
and social amenity and human health. The cost to Queensland primary industries
alone is in excess of $700 million dollars annually in lost production and control
costs.
David Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Burnett Mary Regional Group welcomed
the agreement.
“Not only does it give a better understanding of the complementary responsibilities
of each party, it will also improve access to government and community services,”
he said.
“Our Group already works very well with Councils in the region, but this Statewide
agreement will prevent any confusion or misunderstanding.”
