Rove becomes wild about wildlife

Well known television personality Rove McManus has become an ambassador for conservation in Australia.

As Vice President of the international group Fauna and Flora International, Rove has spent the past few months travelling around the world to learn more about their work to conserve habitats and threatened species.

Their first Australia based conservation effort is in partnership with the Burnett Mary Regional Group to conserve internationally significant biodiversity areas such as the Great Sandy Strait wetland.

Rove said he said was very interested in the projects being undertaken.

“What’s great about FFI is that it’s not just about wilderness conservation, or saving any one particular animal or plant. It’s about allowing humans to live where animals are, and vice versa and it’s this difference that initially attracted to me to the organisation.”

Chairman of the Burnett Mary Regional Group Russell Stewart said the partnership with Fauna and Flora International started with their interest in the Great Sandy Biosphere nomination.

“We were delighted that they supported our nomination, and it has been of great help to have those international connections,” he said.

Mr Stewart said staff from BMRG and FFI were making good progress on the first joint project.

“We are working together to development some conservation strategies for the region,” he said.

“This is only the first project – there are many more in the planning stages, and if the Great Sandy Biosphere is accepted, I predict there will be even more interest in our globally significant region.”

A final decision on the Biosphere nomination is expected in May 2009 when the International Coordinating Council for the Man and the Biosphere Programme meets in Korea.
