World Wetlands Day

 To celebrate World Wetlands Day 2009, WetlandCare Australia, in conjunction with the Burnett Mary Regional Group, Bundaberg Regional Council, Oceanwatch Australia and
Mt Appallan Vineyards are hosting a special screening of the locally produced, Federally funded documentary ‘Source to Sea – Stories of the Burnett River Country’ .

This special event will be held at the Moncrieff Theatre, Bundaberg on Thursday February 5th from 5:30pm – 8pm.

David Brown, CEO of the Burnett Mary Regional Group says: “The theme of this years World Wetlands Day is ‘Upstream Downstream Wetlands Connect Us All’, and the screening of ‘Source to Sea’ beautifully illustrates this. The stories of the Traditional Owners who have grown up on the river, highlight its diverse values while also showing the changes it has undergone over time”.

 Rachael Nasplezes, WetlandCare Australia’s Project Coordinator for the region, says;
 “This event will showcase some of the regions most beautiful and diverse wetlands as well as presenting the important role wetlands play as the ‘kidneys of the earth”.

 “Wetands play an integral role in our region, as they filter and clean the water that would otherwise pollute our beautiful coastal sites, such as the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon”.

The evening will begin at 5:30pm with a foyer display showcasing the regions beautiful wetland areas and offering attendees a taste of local produce, with locally produced wine, locally caught seafood, and locally harvested macadamia nuts (care of Growcom/Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers).

There will also be information available regarding a variety of initiatives that the Australian Government is now offering to landholders and the community alike to help protect and manage the regions important wetland areas.
